From Chaos to Clarity

What’s Hiding in Your Wardrobe?

When I began this wardrobe clear out, I had no idea what I was really walking into. I thought I was just clearing out my cupboard – a bit of spring cleaning, a few bags to charity. But the moment I opened the curtains (yes, I don’t have doors on my cupboards!), I realised this was going to be about so much more than clothes. Inside was history: people, places, events, addictions, old versions of myself – all suspended on hangers, and crammed into drawers. Each piece carried its own story, its own frequency, and within that clutter was a lot of my trapped energy.

I wanted it back!

I am on a mission to break free of all the weight that keeps me tied to yesterdays and live increasingly in the present moment, and clearing out the chaos and clutter of my wardrobe felt like a very necessary step.

The many pieces of clothing seemed to say more about my insecurities than my strengths. They belonged to a woman who was trying to impress, attract, or hide. And that’s okay, she did her best, but it was time to let her go.

Did I feel like doing this?
Absolutely not.
Did I do it anyway?
Bloody right.

The Resistance and the Chaos

There were moments when I just wanted to walk away. I remember standing amid piles of shoes – dozens of them – wearing my Crocs, laughing at the absurdity. My instinct was to escape, make a coffee, maybe pour a gin. But that old pattern would have been just another act of avoidance.

Letting go is painful, it’s not neat or graceful; it’s uncomfortable and emotional. I could feel it physically – that tightening in my chest that said, “Not yet.”

As I resolutely confronted the chaos I went into a state of flow, I got lost in it. The more I sorted, the more energised I felt. Holding each piece up (thank you, Marie Kondo) and asking, “Does this spark joy?” became a kind of meditation.

A Whole World in My Wardrobe

So many versions of me were hiding in this wardrobe. And it occurred to me – this really is like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Except instead of stepping into another world, I’m discovering one inside mine: a world of past selves, of striving and proving and performing.

No wonder it’s so hard to let go. Every piece is attached to a story – who I thought I might become, who I wanted to be seen as, who I was afraid to be.

In the middle of it all, I find her. Another little Michelle. The one who never felt quite enough, who felt invisible and unsafe. And I realised I’ve been dragging her through my adulthood, allowing her to shop, shop and shop some more. Trying to quench an unquenchable thirst by drinking an ocean.

So, I took a breath and said out loud, “I’ve got you, baby Michelle.” Because I did, I scooped her up and held her close. I’m a grown woman now, and I refuse to let my past run the show any longer.

From Chaos to Clarity

The process took an entire day and little by little, order returned.

Clothes were sorted for donation – clothes for charity; a few gifts for friends and family – the pieces I know will genuinely bless them, not burden them.

And then, suddenly, it was done!

The space felt lighter, I felt lighter. It was as though I’d called my energy home, no longer scattered across years of “just in case” and “maybe one day.”

Standing in the calm after the storm, I realised this was never about minimalism or organisation. It was about trust in myself.

Keeping Promises to Yourself

Self-esteem, faith in ourselves, self-confidence, doesn’t come from how we look or what we own. It comes from doing what we said we were going to do – especially when we don’t feel like it.

When we keep small promises to ourselves – clearing a wardrobe, finishing a task, showing up for what we said mattered – we build faith. Faith in our own word, in our ability to follow through.

That’s where true confidence begins. It’s not about grand gestures; it’s about being in integrity, with yourself.

The Aftermath

Now, when I walk into my room, it feels glorious… spacious, calm, alive with possibility. Not space for more things, but space for wonder.

And I keep coming back to this simple truth: neatness is healing.

Clearing out that cupboard became a spiritual act – a way of calling myself back from the past and settling into the present, where all our power truly lives.

So if you’re feeling heavy or stuck, maybe it’s not just your mind that needs clearing. Maybe it’s time to open a cupboard, face the chaos, and see what (or who) might be waiting inside to be set free.

Lots of love

Michelle
